The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
