Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to contest specific decisions from the official, following the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
